Welcome and direction – from the Inukshuk
The inukshuk, a stone figure in the shape of a human, dots Canada's Arctic landscape. They were erected by the northern Inuit people to serve as signposts, guides and symbols of welcome in a land largely devoid of natural markers.
Uniquely Canadian, its meaning has evolved to include leadership and friendship. Most recently the inukshuk was chosen as the logo for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver.
The word “inukshuk” suggests leadership, friendship, guidance and welcome for all those attending the 2009 International Congress.
